The
deafening screams coming from thousands of Korean-pop fans all dressed
up for the SMTown Live World Tour III concert in Jakarta on Saturday
evening provided enough evidence that the SM Entertaiment stars have won
a special place in the hearts of many across the country.
Boy band Super Junior and girl band Girls’ Generation, as well as five other groups and soloists, dazzled thousands of concertgoers with their energetic performances on a gigantic, state-of-the-art stage at the Bung Karno main stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta.
Since the morning, scores of people — mostly girls — had flocked around the venue, armed with placards and posters, and wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the names and faces of their favorite idols.
The massive crowd went into a frenzy when the four-girl group f(x) kicked off the concert with “Hot Summer” at the fully packed stadium at around 7 p.m.
The fans shook their stick lights along with the beat as the girls, donning blue costumes, sang “Pinocchio”.
The latest boy band from SMTown — EXO — then took to the stage with their hits, “History” and “Mama”.
Almost all of the stars greeted their fans in Indonesian, to which their fans replied with excited cheers.
“Aku sayang kalian semua [I love you all],” shouted one of EXO’s members.
The five boys from the group SHINee delivered their chart-topping “Lucifer”, “Juliette” and “Sherlock”, while dancing energetically on the massive letter Y-shaped, hydraulic stage. The stars took turns in appearing and disappearing from the stage, which also included three large screens.
Saturday’s concert was the third in the country for Super Junior — widely known as Suju — but they received the loudest cheers from fans as they sang “Superman”, “Bonamana”, “Sorry Sorry”, and their latest hit, “Sexy, Free and Single”.
Girls’ Generation nearly stole the show with their energetic numbers “Run Devil Run”, “Genie”, “Gee” and “Kissing You”. In the middle of the show, eight members celebrated Hyoyeon’s birthday by singing “Happy Birthday” along with the crowd.
Yunho and Changmin from TVXQ delivered “Maximum” and “Mrotic”, while two soloists — KangTa and BoA — proved they could sway Indonesian fans with their ballads and upbeat songs.
“This concert will be a special show since we will all be performing as one big SMTown family,” said Super Junior’s lead man, Leeteuk, during a press conference several hours before the concert.
The female fans screamed in envy as Max Changmin and Suju’s Kyuhyun sang “Just the Way You Are”, while performing to and hugging an Indonesian girl on the elevated stage.
The biggest Korean concert staged so far in Indonesia was marred, however, by bogus ticket sellers. A number of fans were forced to return home after discovering that scalpers had sold them expensive, but false, tickets.
Other fans were only able to enjoy the action from the outside as the tickets were sold out.
“There are no Tribune III tickets left. Scalpers sold them for Rp 750,000 rather than the normal price of Rp 500,000,” said 22-year-old Reka, who had flown from Lampung the night before to attend the concert.
Even two hours after the concert had started, around a hundred people were still lining up outside, hoping to enter the stadium. Altogether, the concert lasted four hours.
“I will wait here until I can meet Suju,” sobbed Tia, a fan from West Jakarta.
The K-pop stars wrapped up the four-hour concert with the anthem “Hope”, which was followed by an orchestra of fireworks, colorful lighting and hundreds of floating baloons. “The show was amazing, I have no regret,” said 17-year-old Leetha from Cirebon, West Java.
